Caran d'Ache Original: A Review

The Caran d'Ache 849 was one of the first pens in my collection. For the price ($20-$30), the pen is great for those just starting a collection; although, it is equally useful to the seasoned collector as an everyday pen. The 849 is extremely well-made and has an impressive design.

Design:

I'm really impressed by the Caran d'Ache 849's simple and elegant design. The aluminum hexagonal barrel, chrome clip, and chrome push button make the pen feel very durable. The smooth and quiet movement of the push button give a sense of quality when the ballpoint is deployed. The push button's movements remind me of the Lamy Noto; however, the Caran d'Ache 849 gives a bit more feedback which I prefer. The pen is extremely pocketable and is suitable for EDC.

Writing Experience:

The Caran d'Ache 849's writing experience is good for a ballpoint pen. I have grown quite fond of the hexagonal shape as it is quite comfortable when writing. The Goliath refill is decent providing a smooth writing experience, with very minimal white space in the line. In short, it's slightly better than an average ballpoint. The Goliath refill is quite large and known to last longer than the average ballpoint refill; however, it is quite expensive with the cost of a refill reaching almost $10. That's just absurd!

Penman's Final Remark:

The Caran d'Ache 849 has an amazing design, but the ballpoint refill can use some work. This pen is great for EDC.
